What are coaching and counseling?

Going to see a coach or counselor does not mean that there is something terribly wrong with you.  It means that you are simply trying to deal with challenges you face in your life. It is an opportunity to learn about yourself, and to learn about this thing that we all experience called “life.”

Coaching

I think of coaching as a process where we talk about difficult or challenging situations you are currently facing, exploring your feelings, discovering a new way to look at things, getting some support, and developing some strategies for dealing with those situations.

Counseling

You could say that counseling is coaching plus a deeper examination of yourself, where we explore questions like, “What really matters to you in life? What do you want to achieve? How can you feel satisfied with your life? How can you change some of your old patterns of thinking, doing, and feeling?”

Supervision

I also provide supervision for people who themselves are helping other people.  If you are a trainer, facilitator, coach, or counselor, and want some support to better work with your clients, then supervision might be useful for you.

If you decide to work with me, it requires some work on your part: curiosity, honesty, a desire to change, and tolerance for some uncomfortable feelings. But I think it’s worth it, and the people close to you will probably appreciate your efforts and benefit from what you are doing.

If you want to know more about changing old patterns of thinking, doing, and feeling, then you might want to read this: What can I change, if I am in a difficult situation or have to deal with difficult people?
